Every year Broome puts on a series of festivals to celebrate the coming of a season , such as the Mango festival, or to celebrate the local racial intermix such as the Shinju Matsuri, which is Broome's major festival of the year. The Shinju Matsuri Festival has various competitions associated with it, many to do with local art. Winning the main Matsuri Art Award is a prestigious award and many of the local artists strive all year for a piece to put in for the Matsuri Award. The current winner is well known Broome artist, Kerry Stokes. She is no stranger to the award having won it once before. Another popular event is the annual award for the best Mango variety. Being an important export for the region Mangos take on an important role in the local economy. Therefore the more promotion the better. Some shots from this years festival are shown on this page. The whole town is involved in some way in the festival with numerous events included in the celebration of Broome's multiculturalism and the roots of that multiculturalism being the pearling industry that stared in Broome well over a century ago. It's a great time of the year for the town and a lot of hard work for the people running the events on a voluntary basis. In addition to this Broome has 'Opera under the Stars' held at the natural amphitheatre in front of the Cable Beach Club. Also held at this location is 'Symphony under the Stars'. Both are annual events and held in May or June of each year. |
