I was born in the Northeast of England and have worked in the hospitality and wine trades. I am now a natural therapist running a busy practice in Broome. Despite not having any formal artistic training I have always been moved by the work of the great artists such as Turner, Rothko, Rembrandt and Modigliani. I started painting in England in my early twenties working mainly in oils. My early inspiration came from the dramatic landscapes of the Yorkshire dales and moors and the industrial towns of the North of England. I had my first exhibition in Yorkshire before moving to South Australia in 1987. The vibrancy of Australian light and landscape in contrast to the more sombre English countryside was a significant factor in the next stage of my work. I started to work with watercolours and collaborated with other local artists. I undertook several commissions and again mounted successful exhibitions. Since moving to Broome in 1987, my range and style has developed significantly. I now paint mainly in acrylic, but still returns to oils and watercolours as the subject demands. Most of my current work, whilst largely abstract, contains elements of reflected light, movement and colour that are evocative of this vibrant and dramatic part of the world. In particular, I have tried to capture the colour, energy and danger of the huge bushfires that regularly roar through the landscape. As a contrast, I have used watercolours to try to capture the detail and texture of Broome and its surroundings – buildings, flora and fauna and the often stark silhouettes of the magnificent boab trees . I have also been commissioned to produce commercial work for local businesses in the form of postcards, posters and displays . I have had several solo and joint exhibitions in Broome winning the Shinju prize for oils and acrylics in 2003 and continuing to sell my work and receive private commissions
