Tracy Smart is an award winning artist with a difference. She is pursuing a unique approach to painting by combining traditional painting methods with beautiful textiles to create unusual contemporary landscapes. Tracy has lived and worked in the Kimberley and Pilbara regions of Western Australia for over 20 years. Much of her inspiration comes from the distinctive land formations and amazing colours found in the harsh, vast countryside. She arrived in the Kimberley as a young teacher, became captivated by its spell and has never left. Much of her earlier years were spent fishing and camping, experiencing the magic of the Kimberley outback. Tracy is relatively new to the art world and has only been seriously painting for a couple of years. Having worked as a teacher for 17 years and still raising a family, it hasn’t always been easy to pursue the artistic side of life. She has however, managed to dabble in a wide variety of medium and different crafts. She has completed a diverse range of courses such as drawing, acrylic & water colour painting, quilting, pottery, lino & screen printing, basket weaving, silk and fabric painting, textiles dyeing, mosaics, sewing and appliqué.

Boab Magic	Boab Magic A stunning work on canvas developed in Tracy's unique style. The work is quite large at 80cm x 130cm. This piece won Tracy the 2005 Kimberley Art Prize, and is now owned by the Shire of Derby West Kimberley.
Bungling Along	Bungling Along This was an early creation of Tracy's unique technique, and captured the imagination of all who amired it. SOLD
The Winner Acrylic and Textile on Canvas Framed 42cm x 64cm $1,500	The Winner The piece was inspired by the 2005 Broome Race Round. The feather is real and the girl's shirt, hat and dress are made from actual material. The landscape background are painted onthe canvas from acrylic paint. The combination is effective as the winner almost jumps out of the canvas.

Tracy has always had a love of colour and texture. When she began painting she found she was always looking for ways of reproducing the wonderful textures found in nature. She experimented with a variety of ways of developing texture from mixing sand and Polly Filler in the paint to glass beads.

Being an accomplished seamstress has meant that Tracy has always had an eye for beautiful fabric (and a cupboard full!) It was on those long drives through the local countryside that Tracy first saw the ‘Fabric’ of the countryside, a beautiful Kimberley range, lit by the setting sun. It reminded her of an exquisite piece of silk poured onto the land. From this she decided to try an experiment combining acrylic painting with fabric and sewing technique.

What is developing from that initial experiment is a remarkable and distinctive style. Tracy finds each piece a new challenge. She really enjoys the experience of combining the two mediums of fabric and paint and then using stitching to add to the final depth.

“I love developing a piece right from the initial composition, then trying to work out which area is better represented in fabric and which needs to be painted. Then there is the challenge of blending the two together to try to develop depth and an almost 3-D effect I try too achieve with my work.

I have a great passion for what I do and love ‘painting in fabric’ the colours and textures around me. I see each painting as a huge learning curve and revel in the challenge of learning something new with each piece. I feel I will never stop growing and developing as an artist. There is still so much to learn from all the talented people around me.”

2005 was an exciting and rewarding year for Tracy. Firstly she won the Two Dimensional section and also the Grand Prize in the North West Expo Soroptimist International Craft Fair with a mixed media piece based on the amazing land formation, The Bungle Bungles.

In July 2005 she was selected as the Overall winner of the prestigious Kimberley Art prize held in Derby. This was again a mixed media piece based on the familiar landscape and majestic Boab trees found in the region.
