For many years I lived in Sydney. For over 30 years I had a series of wonderful jobs at the State Library, home of thousands of original paintings and drawings of life in New South Wales. After leaving university and beginning to work as a librarian , I wanted to express myself and it was painting and drawing that appealed to me. I had a rich source of inspiration in life in inner Sydney. I looked for an art teacher and found a challenging and stimulating one in John Ogburn. Ogburn had founded a co-operative artists’ Gallery, the Harrington Street Gallery, in inner Sydney. I exhibited here regularly, contributing to over 15 exhibitions. Later I exhibited in other Sydney galleries. My works are held in private collections in Australia and overseas. It was in 1999 that I first came to Broome on a holiday. It filled me with energy and delight. The quirky, individual nature of many of Broome’s features appealed to my sense of fun and set my imagination racing : the eccentric rocks, the pulsating mud flats, the sculptures in the sand, the tiny migrating birds, the stories, myths and history. In 2000 I moved to Broome and a year later, with my web-designer husband Andrew Harrisson, set up a company to produce prints, greeting cards and digital images, now called The Jo McIntyre Partnership Pty Ltd. Andrew produces digital images and does the graphic imaging needed for the products based on my work. In Sydney I was wedded to oil paints and charcoal. Broome gave me the impetus to work in acrylics, gouaches and pastels as well. I enjoy the physical act of painting, not to mention the “looking”, the research and the gradual development of images made to communicate my ideas and feelings and thoughts to the viewer. All this takes time and effort, but when the work is finally complete, I’m elated. Being a member of the Broome 6 Gallery is stimulating and rewarding. It’s good to belong to the only Gallery in Broome solely devoted to Kimberley art. It’s exciting to be part of Chris Maher’s belief in the quality of local art and of his vision for the future of art in Broome.
