The Broome 6 .....

The "Broome 6" was an idea devised by Chris Maher, the proprietor of the Broome 6 Gallery in Hamersley St and Broome Framing and Arts Supplies in Clementson Street.

It has been somewhat of a meteoric rise for Chris who only started the arts shop three years ago. A one stop shop where artists and the public generally can get their art supplies and their work framed, whether it be a family photo or their art work.

Whilst at the shop he realised there was a great deal of quality work coming through for framing but was not being hung in any of the galleries. The artists, for a variety of reasons had not approached the existing galleries to assess their interest in hanging the work and it seemed a waste to Chris to have this work not on public view, so, after some thought and discussion with several artists, individually and finally together, he laid out his plans for a gallery to show their work. Knowing that curiosity will go only so far, Chris has gradually introduced some well known Indigenous work to create publicity and more interest in the gallery. This has turned out to be a great success.

The Broome 6 artists featured at the gallery are:

These artists have enjoyed success with their works hanging in the Broome 6 Gallery with regular sales of both their original work as well, in some cases, their cards and prints that have been developed based on their original work.

Mark Norval and his connections with the Mowanjum people have enabled him to allow their work to be exhibited at the gallery. Mark's own work is of course also on show in its own right.

Chris Maher, the gallery owner, has also contributed some of his work and is on show at the gallery but not as part of the Broome 6. His individual style has met with great success in terms of sales.
