Managers Picks
My name is Andrew Jensz, manager of the Broome 6 Gallery. I like a diverse range of styles, but most importantly I appreciate a good artist, whatever media or style they use, whether it be a work on canvas, to a superb piece of sculpture. I will also introduce new artists in this section, as exposing new talent from the Kimberley region is very important, and these artists bring a new fresh look at some of the oldest country in the world. Enjoy.........

Mowanjum's upcoming exhibition, "Wandjina Budda Buddaing" is opening on the 21st of August, and with it is some new exciting work from the best in the wandjina tradition.
My favourite piece in this collection, and I am biased as I am a big fan of her work, is Sandra Mungulu's Gyorn Gyorn and Unguds - The Flood ( pictured right ). Standing in front of this brilliantly finished piece is a truely spiritual experience.
Sandra currently holds the record for an individual live artist in the tradition, with her major piece, Wallungunda Lai Lai ( 200cm x 200cm ) selling to a US collector in late October 2007.

Rick Colless recently held an exhibition at Broome 6 Gallery titled " Where the South Seas Touch the Sky", in which a preview night was held to raise Funds for 2 charities, Touch the Sky Foundation, a charity helping under priviledged children, and Dreamfit, an organisation that modifies all sorts of machinery, including motorbikes, boats and other leisure equipment for people with physical disabilities.
The picture right top is a selection of 2008 works from Rick, as displayed on the preview night at the Cable Beach property of Thurston Saulsman, although it was a lot of work hanging this exhibition twice in 3 days,( along with computer failures ! ) the setting was a beautiful place to exhibit these excellent works in a home environment.
Bottom picture is from left to right:
Sande McKinlay and Thurston Saulsman from Touch the Sky foundation, artist Rick Colless, Gallery director Chris Maher with his wife Robyn, and kneeling in front is Darren Lomman, founder of Dreamfit and 2007 Young Australian of the year (WA). The piece behind is titled " Moments before the Monsoon" and was auctioned for the charities on the night of the gallery opening of Ricks exhibition.

These works were from our 2008 exhibition, " Regional Influences", a collection of works by Mark Norval and Pilbara based David Hooper. These are currently on display at Kimberley Industries office below the gallery at 20 Hamersley Street. The top 2 pieces are titled "Ferrum" and "Ferrous", and the piece below is titled "Heavy Country" . Several Landscape pieces are also hanging at Galweys jewellery shop in Chinatown. If you have a prominent place that is empty in your office, and would like to add a bit of colour, please enquire at the gallery. |
