Art as an Investment

People have been buying art for thousands of years, and the reasons for the purchase of art is almost as numerous.

Increasingly, people have been buying art as an investment. The ability for Australians to manage their own superannuation has increased the amount of art being bought and sold for investment. If you are considering purchasing art as an investment the following points will be useful.

Before You Buy for Investment

Does the artist you are buying have a good record of sales at the price you are considering.

Has the value of the artists work been increasing over time.

Has the artist ever sold at auction.

Was the work the created using artist quality materials. (this is important as it work created with inferior quality materials can fade or degrade within a few years, ruining your investment)

Was the work framed using archival quality materials and processes. (This is just as important as the artist quality materials as poor framing can destroy the art work)

If you are buying work through a gallery they should be able to confirm all of the above points.

The Broome 6 Gallery uses Art House Framing and Art Supplies for all its framing. Art House are the only framers in the Kimberley to offer a life time guarantee on all its archival framing.

Investing in Art

BUYING ART IN YOUR SUPERANNUATION FUND

  • 1. You can buy art or collectibles as investments in a Superannuation Fund.
  • 2. When purchasing art in a Superannuation Fund you must ensure that the investment is in accordance with the Fund’s established structured Investment Strategy. If you are unsure about this you should consult your accountant.
  • 3. Ordinarily, it is not possible to hang the art purchased by your Superannuation Fund on your wall at home or in your office, because there needs to be a separation of assets of the fund and those of the member. The sole purpose of a Superannuation Fund is to provide benefits to the fund members on their retirement, not before retirement.
  • 4. Provided it satisfies your Superannuation Fund’s Investment Strategy, the Art can be stored and displayed with a recognised gallery (or equivalent) in order to enhance and promote the profile of the artwork and its artist, thereby enhancing the value of the art piece itself. Such an arrangement should be properly documented and be on commercial terms.
  • 5. It may be possible, subject to the Superannuation Funds Investment Strategy, to enter into an arms length arrangement to lease the artwork to a third party provided it is done on commercial terms. You should consult your accountant before entering into such an arrangement and ensure it is properly documented.
  • 6. Any art purchased by a Superannuation Fund should be valued and fully insured against loss or damage. The art piece should be re-valued periodically to ensure that the insurance cover is adequate.
